The Unity of Diversity in the 2024 Paris Paralympics Costumes: A Work of Art by Didiet Maulana

The 2024 Paris Paralympics are set to showcase the hard work and determination of Indonesian Paralympians. As preparations continue, the design of the costumes for the Indonesian contingent is being finalized. Didiet Maulana, through his brand IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana, has taken on the responsibility of designing the costumes this time around. The costumes are inspired by the spirit of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity), which is a key concept in Indonesian culture.

In collaboration with Mills, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), and the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC), Didiet Maulana has created a collection that includes jackets, jerseys, and track pants. The design not only focuses on aesthetics but also embodies the values of unity and diversity that are essential to the Indonesian nation.

The “Sandya Niskala” design series incorporates elements of traditional ikat weaving and features geometric patterns inspired by Indonesia’s identity as an archipelagic nation. The design also draws inspiration from the Garuda Pancasila, the national emblem of Indonesia, symbolizing strength, unity, and solidarity.

The colors used in the costume design were chosen with care, with each color carrying deep meaning. The color scheme includes red for courage, white for purity, gold for grandeur and glory, and touches of gray for responsibility. The design aims to bring an energetic vibe and good hopes for the Indonesian athletes competing in the Paralympics.

To celebrate the launch of the collection, Didiet Maulana held a photo session with Indonesian Paralympians participating in the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The theme of the photo session was “Embrace and Celebrating Our Athlete,” intended to celebrate the spirit and dedication of the athletes representing Indonesia on the international stage.

Didiet hopes that the “Sandya Niskala” collection will inspire and empower the athletes as they compete, embodying a sense of unity and upholding sportsmanship. The collection will be available for purchase through Mills coinciding with the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games in Paris.

Both Didiet Maulana and Didit Hediprasetyo have made significant contributions to designing costumes that carry messages of pride and unity for Indonesia on the international stage.
